Modafinil allows people who suffer from unusual fatigue to remain awake without side effects or impairment of job performance. Clinical trials have suggested that modafinil may be effective for treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In November 2005, pharmaceutical company Cephalon received an approval letter from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market Sparlon (TM), a brand name of a tablet containing modafinil, for the treatment of ADHD in children and adolescents ages 6 through 17. Data from three clinical trials were submitted by the company to the FDA for evaluation as part of the approval process.

Selegiline (l-deprenyl, Eldepryl® or Anipryl® [veterinary]) is a drug used for the treatment of early-stage Parkinson's disease and senile dementia. In normal clinical doses it is a selective MAO-B inhibitor, however in very large doses (>25 mg in a typical adult) it loses its specificity and also inhibits MAO-A. Since it is selective for MAO-B, no special dietary restrictions are needed as with other MAOI drugs. The drug was researched by Joseph Knoll.

Hurricane Katrina was the eleventh named tropical storm, fifth hurricane, third major hurricane, and first Category 5 hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the third most powerful storm of the season, and the sixth-strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded. Katrina formed over the Bahamas on August 23, 2005, and crossed southern Florida at Category 1 intensity before strengthening rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico, becoming the strongest hurricane in the Central Gulf since Hurricane Camille. The storm weakened considerably before making its second landfall as an extremely large Category 3 storm on the morning of August 29 along the Central Gulf Coast near Buras-Triumph, Louisiana.
